About a year ago I was researching a way to hook up freebsd-update with zenity or to make freebsd-update emit DBUS messages so that a gnome applet could display notifications. I'm sure you'll come up with a better implementation that will make freebsd on the desktop much more user-friendly. Best of luck! Excellent project!
